This form of pastoralism finds herders moving their flocks of livestock up to mountain pastures in the summer and down to valleys in the winter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The details vary from place to place, with outliers like Siberia, where the movement of reindeer occurs between upper latitudes and lower latitudes. But the general concept and outcome remains the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The practices gives the animals herders are working with a varied diet, and prevents certain areas from being overtaxed, but it also makes for healthier herds and a more vibrant and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/publications\/morocco-transhumance-biodiversity-conservation-southern-high-atlas\" target=\"_blank\">biodiverse ecosystem<\/a>. There are other benefits as well: anyone who has tasted an egg from a chicken raised on pasture, a burger from a cow raised on grasslands or cheese from a herd of mountain goats can attest to the <a href=\"https:\/\/agrocredit.kz\/en\/main\/press-center\/news\/zhayylymda-mal-ba-an-tiimdi\/\" target=\"_blank\">superior flavors and textures<\/a> that emerge from animals that move around, socialize and forage for food outside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But should we be using the past or present tense? This method of herding encompasses such a delicate and profound way of life, the socio-economic system that springs from it, which includes foodways, crafts, community festivities and a distinct approach to resource management, it has been declared an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/pastoralist-knowledge-hub\/news\/detail\/en\/c\/1673041\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And while it still happens in certain regions, it\u2019s on the decline, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301479723008745\" target=\"_blank\">routes disappearing<\/a> in countries where transhumance thrived for hundreds of years. There are movements to preserve the old ways\u2014and the phenomenal cheeses that emerge when livestock dine on hundreds of different grasses and herbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheeseprofessor.com\/blog\/adopt-an-alp#:~:text=Swiss%20Cheese%20Matchmaker%20%26%20Adopt-an,behind%20the%20people%20and%20places.\" target=\"_blank\">Adopt-an-Alp<\/a> pairs U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.delaurenti.com\/2025\/02\/04\/adopt-an-alp-swiss-mountain-cheeses\/\" target=\"_blank\">retailers<\/a> with Swiss cheesemakers producing banger mountain k\u00e4se like Vacherin Fribougeouis and Berner Hobelk\u00e4se AOP, both of which exude the sharp, tangy, wildness that can only be found in mountain cheeses. They even help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/the-climate-and-economic-benefits-of-rotational-livestock-grazing\" target=\"_blank\">sequester<\/a> carbon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Keiser knew that, going in. What she wasn\u2019t expecting is how much her flerd would bring her neighborhood together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey loved watching the goats and sheep,\u201d Keiser says. \u201cFor the first time, people who had lived next to each for years were meeting each other. We all became friends. They loved that they could benefit from the animals, but didn\u2019t have the responsibility of caring for them full-time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She saw the potential for a greater movement, especially as wildfires ravaged Northern California, multiple years in a row.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe project took on a life of its own,\u201d Keiser says. \u201cWhen people began to see the potential of using animals to help protect the land they live on, build a safer fire ecoystem, and bring the community together, with the side benefits of better meat and dairy, it grew faster than I could have ever imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Keiser applied and received a grant from the Globetrotters Foundation to create Community Grazing cooperatives in which ruminants are led by a herder, but shared among neighbors to help them steward their land and connect with each other. As the founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildoathollow.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Oat Hollow<\/a>, she provides land stewardship consulting and animal husbandry services for other holistic herders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIn each place, it\u2019s different, and that\u2019s part of the beauty,\u201d Keiser says. \u201cI really just try to empower individual herders with the tools and knowledge they need, because every place and community is different. And they know their area best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Project manager at Butte County Fire Safety Council Sarah Jo McDowell says that Keiser\u2019s mentorship was a game changer for their entire community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen I moved to California I started taking classes in range land management and targeted grazing,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was clear that small ruminants are a great way to keep land safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She got her own herd of goats after wildfires in 2020. She grazed the goats across 40 acres of hillside in a burn scar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut I quickly realized it involved a lot more than just putting animals out to graze,\u201d she says. \u201cHonestly, it was a shit show. My dogs got out and ran for three weeks, and the goats had no protection. She opted to move the herd to flatter ground, and started learning how to create and move proper fencing and find a range of forage for her herd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAnd then I discovered Sarah Keiser,\u201d McDowell says. \u201cShe really just gave me a template of what they did in Sonoma, and suggested that I create a similar model here, but suited for our needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Like Keiser, McDowell has found that her moving herd is not only welcome, it has brought entire neighborhoods together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPeople actually bring chairs outside their houses and hang out, watching the goats graze,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s like a community meeting. This is so much bigger than just grazing and fire reduction. This is building small villages within larger communities through connection to animals. It\u2019s silly, it\u2019s fun. It saves live.
